Shops and markets
Koh Samui has a very diverse selection of places to shop and there are literally thousands of shops and stalls to choose from. From the most basic of market stalls to the upmarket central shopping arcade in Chaweng, there are many options to suit all tastes and budgets.
Most shops are open seven days a week and often until late in the evening and the shopkeepers are usually very friendly and will welcome you with a big smile. Bargaining is part of the local culture, so don’ t hesitate to get stuck in and try your luck.
Like in many places around the world, some shop keepers will try to overcharge you, however here on Koh Samui most offer a reasonable rate.
It is also worth noting that although Koh Samui has a vast amount of visitors every year and the amount of money that the tourist industry generates is huge, the average shops don’t charge a lot and therefore don’t make huge profits, so try and keep your bargaining reasonable and fair for both parties.
Samui’s International Tourism Office recommends:
In some shops and stalls you will see tags which say “fixed price” so don’t bother bargaining unless you buy a lot of items at the same time.
